Last Thursday, a few weeks ago
My guy's cool, way cool.
I was making dinner the other night and chatting with him on IM.
When I told him what I was making to eat he said it sounded yummy.
I jokingly told him to come over.
He always comes to see me on Thursday nights on his way home from Connecticut.
He's welcome of course but I was sure he had "other plans". Dinner at home.
We've shared a lot of intimacies over the time we've been together but I've never cooked for him.
Generally, when we eat together it's in a really fine restaurant. He's European and doesn't bother with sub-standard food.
So when he called me later to see if he was really invited to eat with me I was taken aback.
I was making chicken thighs with Jamaican curry powder that my ex had given me. Jasmine rice- and a medley of carrots and zucchini with red onion, seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper for the veggie. I'd never used the curry powder before.
So the dish was somewhat experimental.
My mom taught me never to experiment with cooking when having guests. Remembering this and the idea that my food was so humble, compared to what he and I share in restaurants- made me nervous.
Silly, I know . Since we've shared things much more intimate than my cooking- but still.
He arrived with a nice bottle of Louis Jadot Marsannay, strawberries and an art book as a gift to me. Painting Summer in New England.
Our dinner went well, he enjoyed it enough to have seconds. A supreme compliment.
After dinner we shared our closeness and the art book for dessrt.
A while later he had to go.
When he got home we both signed on to our respective computers and watched You Tube.
We passed a couple of hours sharing vids simultaneously on separate screens.
His favorites were an interview with Jerry Garcia at Hugh Hefner's mansion(gone from You Tube now) and
Matisyahu's vid on Jimmy Kimmel's show.
He's a diverse kind of guy, my man.
