Kurt Vonnegut

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Kurt Vonnegut this morning. Mr Vonnegut was the grandfather of one of my daughter's classmates. He'd lived in Noho for a time.

I remember him sitting thoughtfully on a bench downtown. I also remember hearing him speak at John M Greene Hall at Smith College. He was laugh out loud funny. Funnier than any comedian I've ever heard.

I first read Vonnegut at about the age of twelve. His short story Welcome To The Monkey House stayed in my mind for years. I was excited to rediscover him again later when my high school english class read Slaughterhouse-Five.

Vonnegut had a wit and depth that just lasts and lasts. I'm glad to have read him. To have experienced his humor while quietly seeing him live his life.

Rest in peace Kurt Vonnegut.
