Knowing trees, I understand the meaning of patience. Knowing grass, I can appreciate persistence. Hal Borland

I got my love of gardening from my mom. She was a fantastic gardener. She often recounted that the first thing she ever planted was a packet of nasturtium seeds as a child in the soil outside her tenement home in Worcester Ma. My grandmother chided her and told her they'd never grow. Of course nasturtiums love poor soil and they grew fabulously. So much for my gloomy grandmother's forecast.

I'm pretty sure my mother's love of gardening bloomed then.

Every house we ever lived in was surrounded by lovely gardens. I always admired them but took no part in their creation or maintenancence. Until my mom and I shared a house in my adulthood. Having a place to call our own really inspired me to create the landscape with her. Six years of gardening and trips to garden centers every chance we got.

Later I developed a relationship with someone and moved on. It really pained me to leave those gardens behind.

When my partner and I bought a house together I excitedly created my own flower beds.
They were beautiful thanks to my mom's master advice and plants and cuttings from the gardens we'd shared.

Eventually my marriage soured and came to an end. My gardens faded in the uncertainty of what was to happen about the house.
One of my friends remarked that in a divorce the yard and gardens are the first things to go. So true.

I've lived like a tenant in this house for the last three years.

Last week the issues surrounding the house were finally resolved. I have a mortgage completely to myself. The gardens will return!

My mom would be so happy and proud.

Two weekends ago me and my brother in law were helping Mom to fix the garden of a house she have in Aroeira (built with the profit of Christmas cakes, little snacks and chicken salt cookies that all family helped to made and sell using bus as transport -too many years ago- included my beloved father) and we manage to fix the grass floor (I don't know if its well written) but I get a pain in my spine.
One thing is for sure: I agree with you about to contemplate the universe and all it's secrets, 'cause its all there.
Try to read some of Paracelso (without any pretension of my part, it's somehow linked to the mystery of life).

Thanks J, I will.
I hope your back is better soon.

Not only am I wondering about the universe I now wonder what salt cookies are. Maybe pretzels?

By the way I don't find you pretensious AT all.
Thank you for taking the time to
suggest Paracelso.
Looking in my dictionary I find reference to Paracelsus. Is this the same person? Alchemist and physician,German Swiss born in 1493.

Jozee i love gardening too and have grown some amazingly creative gardens. I can't wait to buy a place in England and get stuck into it again. My house at the moment has such a wreck of a garden its just not worth it. and its not mine so i don't love it.

Fantastic news about your home...i look forward to seeing pictures of your garden in due course...

Oh, yeaaaa! I'm so glad you will be gardening again. I love the pictures you have posted of it so far. Victoria would love the horse. I have to get one of those.
And, I love the story! Thanks for sharing that. Hope more is to follow. :)

Thanks everyone! My gardens are very neglected including some small saplings I have to take out. I will post photos to show progress.

Heather and Jane (the UK) I'm jealous of the climates you get to work in !

Mr Fab I'd grow bouganvillea and jasmine if I could but you know Noho's not suitable for those tropicals.

I love gardens! And I love birdbaths even more. Unless they are full of birds - then i get the cat to deal with them...

Of course you love the garden! Gardens wouldn't exist without pixies, fairies and elves.
The condition mine are in now would suit you just fine. There is a bird bath and I'm sure you could get the neighbor's cat to give you a hand with the pesky birds.
